Mold Prevention in Maryland, DC, and Northern Virginia

mold removal service

Many homeowners have an unpleasant experience when they go into their basement or crawl space and smell the musty, damp smell of mold, that also lingers throughout their home. Mold is overall a distressing problem to have, as it can ruin your overall health and can put a serious dent in your wallet if not handled early, and properly.

No Moisture, No Mold

Mold requires two days maximum before it begins to grow, so make sure that any damp areas are clean and dry before then.

For mold to thrive in your home, it needs moisture and a food source. Unfortunately, mold feeds on wood, drywall and other building materials that can be found in every home, so the only alternative that we can successfully control is moisture. By properly controlling moisture and keeping it to a minimum, we can prevent the return of mold and the nasty odors that come with it.

Adding to moisture problems are water leaks, which can come in a variety of ways. There could be a burst pipe problem, or a leak in your roof, walls, taps, or even your shower. It's far better to immediately fix any and all leaks you find, and it's helpful to scan the entire house for any water leaks you may have been unaware of.

Stop Condensation

Condensation is the liquid that forms on cold surfaces once the water vapor cools, and becomes liquid. A good way to lower condensation is to keep your room's temperature warm, and this can be done by getting insulation installed, or by placing covers on your metal pipes. Just as long as humidity is kept to a minimum, there's a good chance you won't be getting condensation buildup any time soon.

Reduce Humidity

There are certain species of mold that grow from humidity alone, provided that the heat is kept on high for a long time. When humidity levels are higher than 55%, there are species of mold that can grow in your home. To keep humidity low, it's best to have good ventilation.

Don't forget to keep your windows open during hot days, because this is when the humidity levels can be lowest. When it's raining, however, make sure that your windows are closed tight. It's always a good idea to have ventilation in the form of an exhaust fan in rooms where steam and moisture can build up, such as the bathroom or kitchen.

Dry Wet Clothes

Moisture problems can stem from the simplest problems, such as leaving wet clothes in a pile. These wet clothes piled on top of each other can also begin to grow mold, so don't leave them lying around for very long.

The best, most sure way to dry clothes is by using an outdoor clothesline, as the indoor clothesline won't dry them fast enough and the moisture from the clothes will just travel into the air, which is exactly what you don't want.

If you have an indoor clothes dryer, exhaust the air outdoors and make sure that the room where you keep your clothes drying, should be well ventilated.
